This is the tomb of Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah. The design of the tomb is very symbolic. It looks like a tree that was cut down before it had a chance to fully grow, to represent the work that Nkrumah’s never got the chance to complete when he was overthrown and exiled. Many Ghanaians sleep under trees during the day, Nkrumah is resting under this tree. Finally, the columns that make up the monument look like machetes pointing down to symbolize peace.
